소프트웨어학과 김원 석좌교수가 10월 19일(현지시각)에 UIUC(University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)의 컴퓨터학과(Department of Computer Science)가 수여하는 "2018 우수 교육자(Distinguished Educator Alumni Award)" 상을 수상했다.

UIUC 컴퓨터학과는 70년의 역사를 가진 학과로서 미국 대학 랭킹(U.S. News & World Report) 5위 안에 드는 명문 학과이며, 많은 인재를 배출해왔다. 이 학과 졸업생에는 넷스케이프, 유투브의 창업자들도 있다. 

UIUC 컴퓨터학과는 컴퓨터과학의 교육과 연구에 뛰어난 업적을 쌓은 교수나 졸업생에게 2011년부터 매년 상을 수여하고 있는데, 올해는 Distinguished Educator Alumni Award (3명), Distinguished Achievement Alumni Award (1명), Distinguished Service Alumni Award (1명), Distinguished Achievement Memorial Award (1명), Early Career Achievement Alumni Award (1명), Early Career Educator Alumni Award (2명), CS Teaching Award (1명), UIUC CS Outstanding Junior Faculty Award (1명), Outstanding Thesis Award (2명) 등 모두 13명이 상을 받았다. 우수 교육자상 수상자 중의 한 명인 David Lassener는 University of Hawaii System의 President로서 하와이 가천글로벌센터와도 협력을 하고 있다.
