Four Gachon University Department of Software students were recently hired by Naver. It is a rare case that four students from the same department concurrently land jobs at the company, the largest web portal in Korea. All four students, currently seniors at Gachon University Department of Software, were hired through the company’s Summer Internship 2017. Yongsong Kim, Donghyuk Shin and Bosun Hwang applied for android app development positions, while Jiwon Jeong applied for a server developer position. Each of them was assigned to different departments: Clova (Naver’s AI assistant app), Naver Search, Naver Live and Naver Café. After the 8-week internship program, they were eventually hired by the company via presentation and executive interview. Although each department had their own method of assessment, such as participation in actual projects or completion of assigned tasks, our graduates had no problem navigating through the challenges. “To nurture talented software experts who can contribute to the fast-changing field immediately after graduation, we have completely reshuffled our curriculum to focus more on practical aspects and we’re seeing very good results so far,” said Won Kim, President of the Institute of Software-Oriented University Project. “We will continue to nurture the future leaders of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Gachon University Department of Software Team (Professor Sangwoo Kang, Chiyun Song and Seongmin Yang) won the Grand Prize (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award) at 2017 Competition of Korean Information Processing Systems. Twenty-five teams from universities, R&D centers and companies from all parts of Korea participated in the event, which was held on the 13th of last month at Daegu Catholic University. Gachon University Department of Software Team developed and submitted an object-name recognition program that sorts out names of people, places, organizations and other proper nouns. The program was well received for its performance and usability. The competition was divided into two categories: Designation and General. The theme of the former was development and application of object-name recognition systems. The latter was further divided into three sub-categories: △Processing of Korean (morpheme analysis, syntax analysis, etc.), △Any software related to the utilization and learning of Korean and △Any fields related to Sejong Corpus. Entries were reviewed on the 22nd of last month based on software performance to determine the finalists and the winners were announced on the 13th of this month based on a demonstration and overall assessment. “The practical curriculum of Gachon University helped us greatly in the competition because they had taught us how to analyze and solve problems,” said Chiyun Song and Seongmin Yang (Department of Software 4). “Winning Grand Prize in a competition where many talented master’s and Ph.D. students participated is very meaningful. We will take this experience as a stepping stone to become competent software experts who solve problems with confidence.” “Object-name recognition software is very hard to implement properly,” said Professor Sangwoo Kang who led the team. “The Department of Software’s practicality-oriented curriculum served as a foundation for the success of our team.”
A team consisting of Department of Software students (Jiwon Jeong, Maro Kim and Giwook Hong) won the Grand Prize at the Smart City•Farm Idea Competition hosted by the Sejong Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, which was held from May 27 to 28. The Gachon University team exhibited “Farming package platform using data management automation for people returning to farms” and received one million won as the Grand Prize winning entry.
A team of three Department of Software seniors (Seohyun Jo, Juyeon Han and Bosun Hwang) won Best Award at the “Girls in ICT” competition, hosted by the global corporation Ericsson-LG.
“Girls in ICT” is held to promote women to work in the field of ICT. To participate, female undergraduate and graduate students who want to pursue a career in ICT submit an innovative idea that could change the world. Each team can consist of up to three people (one male student is allowed to be a member of a three-person team), and three finalists (regardless of the ranking) receive 1 million won each and are given an internship opportunity.
Among 45 teams (101 people), 10 teams advanced to the finals. Seohyun Jo, Juyeon Han and Bosun Hwang entered the contest with a drone system that ensures the safety of women on the way home by notifying emergency situations and won Best Award. The three students said that preparation and distribution of roles were the keys to their success. Two other teams from Cheonnam National University and UNIST also won the award.

Gachon University’s Team Human Gulim (Taeksang Kim, Hyesung Jeong, Youngsook Seo and Sunghyun Moon) won the Minister of Science and ICT Award (with an additional prize of 3 million won) and Microsoft Special Award for Youth Software Developer at the 2nd K-Hackathon, a nationwide app development competition.
In addition to winning the MS special award, the team also received a tablet PC and was invited to Imagine Cup 2015, a software development competition hosted by Microsoft for undergraduate/graduate students from across the globe.
K-Hackathon was held from last June to October to discover and nurture talented app developers among college students across the nation. There were 147 teams (599 participants) from 81 universities in the contest. Preliminaries were held in five regions (Seoul metropolitan area, Chungcheong, Honam, Youngnam and Jeju) and 25 teams advanced to the finals held on October 2nd at COEX.
Team Human Gulim presented Run & Catch, an active game app based on a police-thief scenario where multiple users, divided into Team Police and Team Thief, play the game while they exercise in real life.
In the finals, the app was well received for both creativity and marketability. The completeness of the app was highly praised since a local elementary school and middle school have used the app for physical education classes. The result was even more meaningful because the team won not only Best Award, but also Microsoft’s Youth Software Developer Award.
“When users play existing smartphone games, they play them by themselves inside their rooms. Run & Catch was highly evaluated because it allows users to work in a team and engage in physical activity,” said Professor Chulyeon Kim, Head of the Software Design and Business Administration Department.
