Modern people live in a software-powered world. Software is at the center of what has changed the world: the Internet and smartphone.
Software serves a pivotal role in transportation, communication, commerce, logistics, medicine, business operation, education, leisure, people’s daily lives and occupations, national defense, and government policies, security and operations. It is instrumental in the advancement of IoT, VR/AR, robotics, self-driving cars and drones, which are bringing revolutionary changes to the world.
From a software-centric perspective, there are two types of people in the World : all others who pursue a myriad of other endeavors in the world changed by the former. Those who change the world via software will integrate software with a myriad of other fields to develop new products/services or start their own business so people can live in a more convenient, healthier and safer world.
Our department’s primary goals are to help students dream to “change the world with software” and to provide them with the education and tools needed to realize their dream. A secondary goal is to ensure that at least 80% of all graduates land full-time jobs or get into graduate schools before graduation.
Our education consists of three major components.
First, theoretical and practical training help students enhance their problem-solving skills using software. Our curriculum introduces students to a solid software foundation so they are equipped with the skills to contribute to companies immediately after graduating and pursue their career ambitions. The educational direction of the department is human-centered intelligence and information technology, which includes big data, AI, IoT, web/mobile technology, VR/AR, drones and robots.
Second, basic education in business administration augments software education with a foundational knowledge of business, including leadership, marketing, management of technology, entrepreneurship, etc. This part of education is essential, since all successful graduates become technology managers after gaining experiences as software engineers, and some graduates will launch their own startups.
Third, character-building education is critical for success in society. One’s character involves passion, responsibility, morality, manners, ability to adapt to organizations and continuous self-improvement. Society has an ever-expanding need for talented individuals with good character.

A special bond is formed among students since they take classes together and collaborate on team projects.
Since the establishment of our department in 2010, it has been proven that students’ academic performance is not correlated with classes they have taken in high school or their gender. What’s important is the commitment and passion to “change the world through software.”However, taking a C or Java programming class in high school will be helpful in introductory classes.
